Rachael Sage is a New York City-based alternative folk-pop artist, and her brand new single ‘Revelation Ground’ is an emotional, cinematic, and poignant piece that offers hope and comfort in these difficult times. It’s the musician’s first release in over two years and serves as the follow-up to her fourteenth (yes, fourteenth!) studio album. The song itself is truly a haunting and deeply moving tune straight from the get-go, with delicate yet rich instrumentation and the enticing, angelic vocals of Sage.
Sage’s poetic lyricism and overall storytelling ability are well known to anybody who has been following her over the years, and on ‘Revelation Ground’, she weaves a beautiful tale of optimism and resilience. “In the hull of my darkness, in the lull of my light, in the shroud of my solace, I hear fight, fight, fight”. Eloquent, passionate, sensational. We at Indie Top 39 have fallen in love!
‘Revelation Ground’ is one of the most haunting, emotive, and cinematic tunes we’ve heard all year!

What does the song mean to you?
Overall as an artist, my hope is always to empower and uplift. With ‘Revelation Ground’ I hope I’ve created a song that’s equal parts comforting, reflective and a kind of emotional “reset” – the way the Sabbath allows us to let go of stress and find relief and meaning in collective rest. It’s been a rollercoaster of a few years for everyone and there’s a lot to digest and question ongoing but also a lot to let go of; this is a song about finding balance within all of that toward the goal of positive renewal.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be.
I wrote ‘Revelation Ground’ under lockdown as we were all trying to adapt to the impacts of the pandemic, along with sociopolitical unrest and protest against racial injustice in the United States. As a recent cancer survivor, I knew it would not be safe for me to be in crowds and show up physically to support the peaceful protests against police brutality during that time – so the song was my way of expressing everything I was feeling and doing my best to “show up” for, even if the only way I could do so was from my little attic apartment on a computer (where I was at the time).
Energetically, my inspiration was the song ‘Turn, Turn, Turn’ and I was definitely trying to capture the same kind of idealism that has long inspired me from 1960s folk music.
What would your life be like without music?
I don’t even want to imagine it! I suppose I would be a full-time painter and an actor because those are my other creative loves and also storytelling/expressive mediums. But I would not have had the myriad adventures and opportunities to connect with so many other cultures and communities all over the world, without music. It has been the primary way I’ve been able to travel, meet diverse peers and listeners, and generally learn most of what comprises my life philosophy. I would probably be a lot less confident and joyful…this question really makes me appreciate the gift of music!!
Please finish the sentence – Music to me is…
Life-saving.
