Sometimes there’s just nothing like a good old-fashioned classic rock tune. And whilst their latest single ‘For the Ones That Got Away’ is certainly that, Los Angeles-based alternative rockers Futurelust include an extra layer of excitement with the addition of indie synth textures. Recorded at Clear Lake Recording Studios in North Hollywood, the song’s beginning is dreamy and sets the perfect tone for what’s to come. Pounding, piercing drums are introduced and the soaring vocals of Taylor Dye take on a new dimension. Some exceptional guitar work is added to the mix, and the track reaches a crescendo of epic proportions. As the follow-up track to their highly-acclaimed debut single ‘Fire,’ ‘For the Ones That Got Away’ showcases a band on the serious up-and-up. They also just released a killer music video for the song that was filmed on location in Joshua Tree. Check it out below!
‘For the Ones That Got Away’ is an instant classic! A straight-up rocking anthem of mammoth proportions!
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
‘For the Ones That Got Away’ is a letter to myself as much as a letter to a loved one lost. It started off about someone that drifted away from me before the pandemic hit. However, as time goes on, I’ve begun to realize that it’s a song that was written for me just as much as it was for her.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
‘For the Ones That Got Away’ started as just a chord progression and melody that I wrote on my analog synthesizer. It was one of those songs that gets stuck in your head; one that you can never quite figure out how to finish. However, once we began collaborating with our vocalist, Taylor, it was one of the first songs that he really gravitated towards. After many long writing sessions on the roof, the song finally began to take shape. When we went into the studio, we really focused on ensuring that the recording conveyed the same emotion and intimacy that we felt when writing the song.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“Been shaking the bottle till it’s empty. You drifted away from me in stages. Still, you’re the best I’ve ever had.” These lines represent the initial feelings that hit me right away and became the inspiration for this song.
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
Stranger Things! We love their soundtrack and the layers of lush, analog synthesizers. The Stranger Things Season 1 soundtrack, along with John Carpenter’s movie scores, were some of the inspiration behind the synth parts in ‘For the Ones That Got Away’.
