London-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Alex Spinney, returns with a soulful, infectious, and downright killer tune on his brand new release ‘Boodiyayay’. The track serves as the follow-up to the musician’s debut release ‘I Remember’, and sees Spinney getting a bit more upbeat and even a little bluesy. What doesn’t change, however, is Spinney’s lush, inviting, and confident vocals. Describing the tune as a “cathartic, revenge-filled anthem”, the artist proves himself a superb storyteller and just a seriously impressive musician overall. Yes, that’s him on the piano as well! “I guess that you could claim it should have been my turn,” sings Spinney. “Done my share of burning so it’s me who’s getting burned.” The talented musician is busy working on his debut EP, and we at Indie Top 39 are certain that Alex Spinney has an incredibly bright future ahead of him!
‘Boodiyayay’ is easily one of the freshest and most original tracks we’ve heard this year. We’re loving Alex Spinney at the moment!

What does the song mean to you?
To me, this is a cathartic and revenge-filled track, detailing the brutal end of a pretty rocky relationship. People will inevitably ask what ‘Boodiyayay’ means, and the real answer is that it’s open to interpretation! I think it has a slight element of witchcraft about it, which for me places it in this very earthy world of catharsis and revenge, almost as if one is cleansing oneself of a past relationship. Hopefully the song takes people on this journey to find closure as it builds to its huge, powerful climax.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
It’s a pretty special one to me, as it all started from a simple ten second recording I made on my phone of the main ‘Boodiyayay’ riff, whilst walking around London around five years ago! A few years later, I dug out the voicenote, and then from that riff I began to create this bluesy, folky sound that is almost hypnotic and otherworldly, whilst hopefully still staying true to my own pop style.
What do you hope to achieve with this song?
Ultimately, I want to show another side of myself as an artist. This is only my second release, but with this track, I guess I wanted to make a bolder statement, and on some level, subvert expectations. I think people could have expected another piano ballad from me, and whilst I do love writing songs like that, I’d like to think that I have so much more to show. I’m really passionate about mixing things up and venturing into different musical genres, whilst retaining my own musical identity.
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
That is such a good question! And yet harder than I thought it would be. It would have to be something pretty epic, and also take place in the natural world, or have some earthy element to it. I’ve just recently started Yellowjackets, this show about a group of teenagers stranded in the mountains – Lord of the Flies territory, and I think that could definitely work. Alternatively, Ozark – such an amazing show, and I’m sure there’s an action sequence that the end of my song could work well for! Netflix, you know where to find me…
