With November more than halfway done we’re about to reach that pivotal time of year. The “Christmas season”. Everywhere you go shopping will be playing Christmas music and decked out in holiday cheer. As the holiday with the second best soundtrack (Halloween has my heart) it tends to divide people into either loving the music or hating it. Whether you like it or not you’re bound to hear it but I will promise you that we here at Indie Top 39 will keep finding the best music there is! Christmas or not, only the best of the best makes our New Music Sunday list, so before the Christmas season is upon us here are 7 of our favourite songs from this week.
Operator Unknown & Bryonii » Running Away
From the fun, airy vocals to the house-inspired groove I loved every minute of ‘Running Away’
INDIE TOP 39
The cool electronic instrumental gives plenty of room for Bryonii to show off on their new song, ‘Running Away’. Clocking in at a little over 5 minutes, the steady growth throughout ‘Running Away’ ensures the song is always fresh. Break-neck drums are met with EDM-like synths while the vocals carry the tune. The tone is light and would be just as beautiful as acapella. When paired with the instrumental, however, there’s an underlying intensity that darkens the mood. Despite this underlying darkness, the beauty is still at the forefront. While this may be the first collaboration between Bryonii and producer Operator Unknown it’s not likely to be the last.

Giya » Upside Down
Beautiful yet easy-going melodies make ‘Upside Down’ unforgettable.
INDIE TOP 39
Funky vibes push UK-based artist Giya’s newest single ‘Upside Down’ along. Driven by the bass and drum kit, easy-going vocals seemed to drift almost psychedelically at points. Never losing their warm, exciting energy – the whole track was entrancing. By the time the trumpet enters the texture, the presence is already huge. Melodies were approachable and just fun to listen to. Despite the complexity of the instrumentals, everything locked into the groove easily. ‘Upside Down’ is sure to make anyone feel hip and cool. An all around great song, and not one that I will be forgetting any time soon.

Julian Mudd » Growing Pains
‘Growing Pains’ by Julian Mudd was awesome – it was both catchy and unpredictable.
INDIE TOP 39
The ever-changing texture of ‘Growing pains’ gave Julian Mudd the perfect platform to experiment and show off his range. Despite the almost chaotic nature of the song, it was still easy to listen to and enjoyable. Supported by the powerful vocals, it truly isn’t a release you’re going to want to miss. Additionally, listeners will have the opportunity to “mint” their own unique version of the song when the NFT launches. Each version will have a one of a kind combination of bass, chords, fills, percussion, and vocals. This overlapping of artforms is unprecedented and an absolutely awesome release all around.

JXCKY » The Imitation Game
Unlike anything other music out right now, ‘The Imitation Game’ redefines beauty
INDIE TOP 39
JXCKY, the pop artist based out of Melbourne Australia, combines easy-listening, pretty melodies with a warped electronic instrumental on his newest release ‘The Imitation Game’. Beautiful vocals push the song while the instrumental bounces along easily. At times feeling like trip-hop, while at others like pop or electronic. This melding of genres is cool, unique, and shows off the chaotic beauty of it all. Never losing the underlying excitement, the mood is constantly changing. The modern sound twists smooth vocals with confidence airing on arrogance. ‘The Imitation Game’ is as experimental as it is catchy.

Mother Culture » Drawing By Design
To call Mother Culture’s newest release, ‘Drawing By Design’ exciting would be an understatement.
INDIE TOP 39
Melbourne-based duo Mother Culture show off their prowess on their fun new single, ‘Drawing by Design’. Bringing huge energy through the many different moods sounds easy for them. At points the texture thins out, despite this however, the underlying intensity is still there. Whenever one of the exciting chorus comes around Mother Culture manages to carry the familiarity of the track while pushing it towards its climax. After listening just a single time I caught myself humming it for the rest of my day – not only the chorus either! I thought every part of ‘Drawing By Design’ was enjoyable and fit the mood perfectly.

Nevin » Backseat Show
Ethereal, intense, and atmospheric – ‘Backseat Show’ rocks!
INDIE TOP 39
Listening to ‘Backseat Show’ by Nevin is almost impossible to describe. Strong vocals seem to float above the almost dystopian texture. Driven by thumping bass at times, the texture constantly was moving. Other times the song would find itself driven by beautiful piano lines or thoughtful guitars. The wide range of moods created an incredibly diverse sound. Whenever one mood seemed to settle, the beginnings of the next were already creeping in. No matter what was happening in the instrumental, however, powerful vocals gave ‘Backseat Show’ energy and defined the band’s sound. At points chaotic, at others exciting – the soundscape was mystifying.

The Thing With Feathers » Static
High energy defines The Thing With Feathers sound on their new single ‘Static’.
INDIE TOP 39
One of the first things to stick out about The Thing With Feathers’ new single, ‘Static’, was the cohesiveness of the band. Each voice can be heard, but more importantly everything melded to create something even bigger. Their sound is recognizable and fun. Between catchy, exciting melodies and the great mixing it was an absolute joy to listen to. Vocals perfectly captured the mood. Not only were lyrics easy to follow, but they were easy to remember and enjoyable. ‘Static’ is worth every minute spent listening to it. Although November is upon us, it’s a perfect song to roll your windows down and enjoy the sun to (depending where you live).
