We get asked often what is Indie and how we select music? Well, the easy answer is Indie stands for independent and that’s the beauty that we are open to different styles. And when I first heard ‘In Your Bones’ by a Munich-based producer ONVN who’s trying to break into the techno scene, I knew that we need to do something about it.
It’s just damn good. We will be sharing our thoughts on the track on our New Music Sunday later in the week. Today we are super thrilled to introduce you to ONVN .
Congratulations on your latest release! Tell us about your journey until the moment you released ‘In Your Bones’.
My idea was to make techno more commercial for people. I often hear friends saying that techno is too hard. So I decided to produce a more commercial version of a Techno track. With deep and powerful vocals on a danceable instrumental. I would say that the genre cannot be called techno. But it goes in this direction. Also, I love to try out new styles of music and ideas. I did the instrumental a few months ago and thought it would be even better with vocals. So I hooked up with Joshua and we recorded those vocals. I was really impressed with his singing talent. Then there was a little fine-tuning and mastering and the song was done.
The song is a collaboration between you and JOSHUA BAUR. How did you meet?
Joshua and I have often seen each other at parties. We both originally come from the same small town in southern Germany. So I made this shoutout on Instagram that I was looking for someone who could sing. Then he got in touch with me and we started.
You already announced that you are working on the EP together. Does that mean that In Your Bones is the first of many singles to come?
Working together was pretty easy. We hit it off and we had so much fun recording the track. So it won’t be our last song. We are already working on further ideas. Let’s see what the future holds.
Do you already have plans when we can expect to hear it?
Due to the current situation, we have a lot of time to deal with our hobbies. So a lot of creative things are being created. I would say that our new songs will be released in the first half of this year.
Who would be your biggest influences sound wise?
There are so many musicians who inspire me. But the ones that inspire me the most are: Stephan Bodzin, N’to, Adriatique, Moonwalk and Monolink.
What goal would you want to achieve with your music?
My biggest goal is to earn enough money with music to quit my main job.
ONVN
It’s not about getting rich with it. It’s more like doing what you love as a job. Furthermore, I’ve already had a gig with 2000+ people and I would love to have this more often. It gives you such a nice feeling to play in front of such a big crowd.
What is the hidden meaning behind choosing NANO written backward as your stage name?
I started playing music as a DJ at a young age. Back then I called myself by my nickname: DJ Nano. I played different genres and had different tastes in music. Then I moved to Hamburg for a year on business and got in love with the electronic nightlife of the big city.
So my taste in music began to turn 180 degrees, and so did my stage name.

How would you describe the EDM community in Germany?
The EDM community in Germany is large. It feels bigger and bigger every year. So it’s very cool that there are so many good clubs in Munich. I just hope that after this difficult time the clubs can all reopen as usual and that we can just maintain this beautiful club scene.
2020 has been extremely challenging for the creative industry. What kept you sane?
I used the time a lot to take care of myself. I spent a lot of time with my girlfriend and family and made sure that we stay close despite this time. At least by chat, phone, and FaceTime. Since I couldn’t leave the house so much, I also had a lot of time to be creative and a lot of good music was created.
My goal is to be heard by many

How would you define success in the music business?
Success for me is when many people hear and love my music. As mentioned before, it’s not about earning money. My goal is to be heard by many. I very often look at my statistics and I am very happy when people from all over the world listen to my music.
Music to me is everything

Can you please finish the sentence: Music to me is…
Everything. I think it’s amazing how it can touch and even direct people. Nothing changes your mood like the music you listen to. This is exactly why you can influence or touch people so positively with your music. I really like that.
What is one piece of advice you would give your younger self before the release of the very first single?
I’ve always been very self-critical and spend hours still turning finished songs. I would tell myself that this is a good thing, but you don’t have to go overboard. Just believe in yourself and go with the flow.
What you got planned for 2021?
A lot is planned for this year. Since I am interested in many different styles of music, I will also be releasing my first rap song at the beginning of the year. I know it doesn’t match the rest of my music, but the music is released under a different name. And I think artists shouldn’t get stuck in one genre of music they like. I love to act out in different styles of music. That is also the reason why there will be an orchestra version on the ‘In Your Bones’ EP. It’s a 1,5-minute small bonus track. What I did is, I composed an orchestra instrumental and put Joshua’s voice over it. I really like to put variations in my music and give the listeners something special to hear.
